A picture behind the code. The fade keeps it light enough to scan. Stays in your browser.

Set to Max because a logo covers part of the code.

A text QR code stores your words directly in the pattern. When scanned, the phone shows the text. Nothing is loaded from the internet, so it works in basements, on planes and in places with no signal.

Keep it short. A QR code can hold a few hundred words, but every extra character makes the pattern denser and harder to scan from a distance. Under 300 characters works well on small labels. Non-Latin scripts work too: the text is stored as UTF-8.

Where a text QR code helps

    1

    Labels and inventory

Serial numbers, batch codes and storage locations that a scanner app can read.

    2

    Instructions on the spot

Door codes, locker numbers, short how-tos where there is no Wi-Fi.

    3

    Games and treasure hunts

Clues hidden in codes around a room or a park.

How to make a text QR code

    1. 1

Type or paste your text. Shorter text gives a simpler, more reliable code.

    2. 2

Keep strong contrast. Text codes are often scanned in poor light.

    3. 3

Download and scan it with the phone in flight mode to confirm it works offline.

At most 2,953 bytes at the lowest error correction: about 2,900 Latin letters, or about 980 Chinese characters, which take 3 bytes each. Under 300 characters is a practical limit for print.

Anyone who scans the code can read it. Do not put passwords or personal data in a code that others can see.

No, text is fixed in the pattern. To change it, make a new code.

Some camera apps offer a web search for plain text. The text itself is still shown in the preview.
