How to put a QR code on a business card

A QR code lets people save your details in one scan instead of typing them. Choose what it opens, keep it at least 2 cm wide, and leave space around it.

What the code should open

The most useful choice is a contact card (vCard): scanning it offers to save your name, phone, email, company and website straight into the phone’s contacts. Alternatives are your LinkedIn profile, a portfolio or a booking page.

A static vCard holds all your details in the pattern, which makes it dense and hard to scan at business-card size. A dynamic vCard holds a short link to a hosted contact page, so the pattern stays simple and you can update the details if you change jobs or numbers.

Size and placement

Print the code at least 2 cm wide, with a clear margin, on the back of the card or on the front if the design allows. Keep it away from the edges, which can be cut slightly differently on each card. Use dark squares on a light background, even if the rest of the card is dark.

Before you order

Business cards are printed in hundreds, so test first.

  1. 1Download the code as SVG or PDF and place it in your card design.
  2. 2Print one card at home at 100% scale.
  3. 3Scan it with two phones and save the contact to check every field.

Questions

vCard is understood by almost every phone. MeCard is shorter, so it suits very small codes, but holds fewer fields.

With a dynamic contact code, edit the details in your dashboard and the printed cards keep working. A static vCard has to be reprinted.
